Remote working and the business benefits

Remote working is growing in popularity amongst workers and employers. There was a time when working from home was seen as a perk reserved for senior staff within an organisation. Managers were nervous about allowing staff to work from home where they couldn’t be seen. Staff were generally expected to be at their desk for set working hours and visibility was important in the workplace but attitudes have changed and so has technology.  

Then there are remote workers who may not work from home but spend time out visiting suppliers or clients, attending meetings and working from different locations. The right systems can help these remote workers to be more effective and collaborate with their teams from wherever they may be on any given day. 

There is evidence to suggest that remote workers are more productive and advances in technology have made it easier for businesses to embrace remote working. Having the right IT systems and infrastructure in place can enable businesses to reap the benefits of remote working.

Cost savings on rent and utilities. Overheads such as rent, business rates and utility bills can be reduced. Even if only a proportion of a workforce works from home or staff only work remotely on certain days this can still mean the potential to reduce overheads. In fact, a survey carried out by Vodafone revealed that UK businesses could save a staggering £34bn by allowing their employees to work remotely.

Increased productivity is something every commercial organisation strives for and remote working has been shown to make a difference. 91% of remote workers believe they ‘get more work done when working remotely.’*

Better staff retention and the flexibility of home working can help improve staff retention. The option to work from home can make all the difference to a working parent or someone with an elderly relative to care for.    

Workers who have the option to work from home feel they have the trust and confidence of their employer. This combined with the improved work-life balance leads to happier employees.

Employee benefits

One of the most frustrating aspects of working life can be the daily commute. Remote workers can avoid the daily commute altogether.

  • saving them money on travel costs
  • giving them more spare time (some of which is often spent working too!)
  • avoiding the frustration of traffic jams delayed or cancelled public transport.

Greater flexibility is a huge perk for some employees. Not everyone wants to work 9-5 and remote working can offer the flexibility to start work earlier or later to work around other commitments. Those who have the option to work remotely or flexible are happier. When asked in a recent survey “How happy are you at work?” on a scale of 1 to 10 remote workers scored 8.10 on average, compared to ‘all workers' score of 7.42.*

Of course, this depends on the nature of the role and some jobs require fixed hours regardless of where the person is working.
